SF2016: The Whispering Star

The Whispering Star – Sat, Oct. 15 @ 1p

(Off-site at NeueHouse)

A sci-fi elegy to humanity and nostalgia, Sion Sono’s The Whispering Star–our favorite of the impressive five films he made last year–pairs the casual-cool effortlessness of early Jim Jarmusch with Sono’s own pure romantic ideals. A simple, minimalist story of an android traveling through the galaxy, delivering years-in-wait packages to the last remaining corners of civilization, Star bathes in ASMR-inducing delights that a lone android (but probably us too, more than we’d like to admit) would logically love–the subtle sounds of drips, clicks, steps, sweeps, brewing tea, and shuffling packages. Bolstered by Hideo Yamamoto’s ghostly, empyrean cinematography and Takeshi Shimizu’s impeccable, sly, and witty production design, Sion Sono delivers one of his greatest films to date.

Dir. Sion Sono, 2015, DCP, 100 min.
