Karen, a 50-year-old former teacher and father of a young daughter, has traveled from France to Florida with one desire: to transform into a horse. “Pony play” is a form of role-play–referred to as one of the “foundation fetishes” by Karen’s American cowboy trainer–in which participants engage in a consensual wrangler-beast relationship that, over time, modifies once-human into object. Exquisite, poetic filmmaking delicately documents these uncanny actions, positioning some kind of magic within the trappings of apple-pie Americana as the camera lyrically drifts between training sessions and the near-mythical forest just beyond the stable. Underscored by the lilting, falsetto voice of a male sopranist soundtrack and impressionistic moments with near-balletic insects, Karen’s reflections on gender, dreams, and the agony and ecstasy of life contribute to her beautiful development into what should be everyone’s ultimate goal: to become a pony star fighter.
